The Fundamentals of Stage Technology 1 course is taught in Semester A to teach students core skills in Lighting to support them when working as Stage Technicians on APA productions. The course is taught in the EDT Bethanie Annex campus and is taught on Monday mornings and afternoons. Please note that there are a few classes taught outside of teh normal slots.

Course Description

This course is made up of a series of lectures, illustrated with practical exercises conducted in the laboratory and theatre, which are designed to give the student a thorough grounding in the safe application of selected stage equipment, supporting methodology as well as basic essential networking technique. It introduces theory, applications, construction, networking systems, and operational awareness for stage technology systems used within a live performance context and provides the student opportunities to apply newly acquired knowledge in a controlled environment. Reference is made to various techniques related to departmental organization, specific stage machinery and scenic components, technical drawing and communication, rigging, and special effects. Current productions are case studied when appropriate.

Learning Outcomes
1 Apply their understanding of relevant applications and assess or evaluate the requirements and limitations of departmental organization and structure, specific scenic elements and machinery for the stage, and basic fall protection theory;
2 Demonstrate knowledge of the construction of simple staircases or platforms and employ operational skills which allow for adaptation to situational requirements;
3 Demonstrate an understanding of the basic drafting standards for technical theatre;
4 Demonstrate knowledge of network system theories and an understanding of the application of those theories;
5 Demonstrate knowledge and an understanding of the operation of network systems and connectivity of a network system.
