The Intro to Production Practice course provides the student with the opportunity to work on a total of 4 APA productions. 3 roles as EDT crew in Lighting, Sound and Stage, and 1 production in another TEA area. These roles will be allocated amoungst the productions supported by the EDT Department. APA Drama Dance and Opera productions, plus EDT productions such as EDT touring

Course Description

This course provides the student with opportunity to fulfil the role of Lighting, Sound or Stage Crew. Students undertake assisting duties, project work, production work and various assignments relating to Academy or other productions. It provides the opportunity to apply skills in technical theatrical equipment and systems used within a live performance context and the necessary skills to install and operate the equipment for live performances. The students will be allocated roles covering lighting, sound and stage technology and can elect one other TEA area.

Learning Outcomes
1 A detailed knowledge of roles and requirements of a Lighting, Sound or Stage Crew and an awareness of the application of those theories/ideas, contexts and frameworks;
2 Comprehend and employ specialist operational and be capable of adapting them to the requirements of the situation;
3 Communicate effectively and in an appropriate manner ensuring the giving and receiving of precise information;
4 The ability to identify the key elements of a problem and choose appropriate methods for their resolution;
5 Can take responsibility for own learning with minimum direction;
6 Can develop working relationships of a professional nature within the discipline.

Roles & Responsibilities

There are carefully defined job definitions for each student role when working on a production as well as assessment criteria to measure the ability of the student to fulfil the specified role.

EDT Crew are assigned to be part of the Lighting, Sound or Stage team responsible for setting up the lighting or sound technical equipment or stage scenery for the production. A production meeting will be held prior to the first set up call by the Lighting Designer, Sound Designer or Technical Director. During this meeting you will be informed of the requirements for the fit up of the production and your role in the process

Role of the EDT Crew
  • 1. Attend all calls as required from the first set up call through to the strike out. Crew Call Schedule will be posted on the Callboard.
  • 2. To fulfil all duties as assigned by the Technical Director, Lighting Technician, Sound Technician or Stage Technician.
  • 3. To work with the team members, in the installation of the technical equipment required for the production.
Crew Call Schedule
  • 1. Crew Call Schedule will be posted on the Callboard every Thursday evening prior to the Call by the Student Technical Director.
  • 2. Any changes of the Crew Call can be made by the Student Technical Director on the Callboard, no less than 24 hours prior to the call. If changes are necessary to be made within 24 hours prior to the call, students will be informed personally by the Student Technical Director or his/her assistants.
  • 3. All EDT students are expected to be available for Crew Call from 19:00 to 23:00, Monday to Friday (or occasionally during the day as classes allow), and from 09:00 to 23:00, Saturday.
  • 4. No Call on Sunday with the exception of Tech Week and performances.
  • 5. No late-night Call (e.g. Call ends after 23:00) is expected except for striking and/or loading-out of a production.
  • 6. THE ABSOLUTE CURFEW IS 23:00!!!
Absences, Lateness, and Unavailability
  • 1. Students are expected to BE READY TO WORK at the scheduled time. Therefore, please arrive a few minutes prior to the call time.
  • 2. Negligence in reading the Callboard cannot serve as an excuse for lateness or absences.
  • 3. In case of an unforeseen circumstance that causes an absence or lateness for a call, student must inform the Student Technical Director AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, in order to limit the inconvenience to your colleagues.
  • 4. Absences from crew will be presented to the supervisors accordingly, and follow the same conditions as absences from class, that is, an “absent” will be recorded.
  • 5. Student, who will be unavailable (N/A) for any Call that takes place in the following week, is required to inform the Student Technical Director by 18:00 on the Wednesday before.

Introduction to Production Practice: Assessment

Production Practice work is reviewed by a variety of means including Departmental and School staff and by visiting professionals who come to the Academy to work on productions or to teach intensive workshops. The production supervisor after consultation with, other production personnel and student Lighting and Sound Designers and Technical Directors will award grades and assessments for production work. The final grade will be given for the total work completed by the students throughout each individual full production process.

Breakdown of the Assessment Criteria for EDT Crew
1. Craft Skills as an EDT Crew

The student’s ability to perform and successfully complete the work associated within the area of the student’s assigned specialism.

The student will demonstrate:

  • The ability to implement the instructions of from the Technical Director, Lighting Technician, Sound Technician or Stage Technician on the installation and strike of all production related equipment.
  • The ability to interact with other Departments in the installation and strike of all technically related equipment.
  • The ability to operate stage cues such as fitting of radio mics or operating follow-spot during the performance.
  • the ability to make constructive contributions to formulating and solving required tasks.
2. Communication Skills

The student’s ability to communicate well with all EDT team members, and other members of the production team.

The student will demonstrate:

  • The ability to express ideas clearly.
  • The ability to listen and respond to other people’s ideas.
  • Skills in interpersonal negotiation and group collaboration.
3. Problem Solving Skills

The student’s ability to solve problems and work with others in providing an effective solution.

The student will demonstrate:

  • The ability to recognise problems when they arise and prioritise the problems in order of importance to the production.
  • The understanding of the problem and the implication of the problem on the current situation.
  • The selection, categorisation and use of new information and sources, assessing its validity and relevance to solve necessary problems.
  • Decision making skills in the selection of the solution to the problem.
  • Implementation of the solution and verification that the chosen solution is working. The implementation of revised solutions if the original is not working.
4. Time Management Skills

The student’s ability to manage their time and to work efficiently during the production call time.

The student will demonstrate:

  • The scheduling of the EDT Crew’s time to fulfil all requirements as required./li>
  • The ability to prioritise work and tasks of the EDT Crew.
  • Punctuality and appropriate attendance of calls.
  • The ability to achieve all deadlines.
5. Personal Skills

The student’s commitment to the project, sense of responsibility and understanding of the demands (and requirements) of the job will be considered.

The student will demonstrate:

  • A positive attitude and commitment to the assigned role and the production
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt and make necessary changes.
  • A passion to the assigned role and to the production.
  • Confidence in fulfilling the assigned role and to the production.
